Lumps And Bumps On The Skin: What To Expect And When To Worry

Date December 12, 2018 12:01

If you find a lump on your body, try not to freak out. It can be absolutely harmless, even though this does not mean you can ignore the issue. Sometimes, it is only lipomas, the subcutaneous soft tissue tumors. Usually, they do not cause any painful sensations, unless they compress nerves, and lipomas don’t need to be removed.

However, some lumps can hide the health hazards.

Skin cyst

Non-cancerous, slow-growing lumps on the skin may cause no pain unless they get inflamed or infected. In this case, they need to be drained or removed, or treated with medications.

The cyst does not disappear on its own and needs medical interference if it causes problematic symptoms.

Keratoacanthoma

This type of red bump is fast-growing, and it can reach a large size, from 1 to 3 inches in diameter. It appears on the skin after overexposure to the sun and can be found anywhere on the body. People over 60 are most likely to find keratoacanthoma on their skin.

Neurofibromas

The soft growth may appear on the skin or even under it. It is usually harmless, but in rare occurrences, these lumps can evolve into cancer. The problematic symptoms include pain, electric sensation when you touch them and, depending on where the neurofibromas are located, even neurological damage. They can be removed if necessary, and do not regrow as a rule.

Folliculitis

The lumps on the skin caused by the inflammation of hair follicles are called folliculitis. This condition may appear due to damaged follicles after waxing, shaving, and wearing tight clothing. People with diabetes, chronic leukemia and HIV/AIDS are in the risk group due to the low immune resistance to inflammation.

Even superficial folliculitis may cause skin damage and spread so it’s important to seek medical attention if you have progressive itchy, burning and painful skin. The most common type of deep folliculitis is a boil (furuncle), which is associated with Staphylococcus infection. A cluster of furuncles is called a carbuncle. You may require the help of a surgeon.

Adult soft tissue sarcoma

The cancerous lump that emerges in the chest, legs, arms, or behind the abdomen. It resembles a grouping of bumps that cause pain only when it grows large enough. It is not so easy to locate it, as it is often embedded in the body, and can be found through biopsy.

Do not postpone your visit to the hospital if the bump causes you troubles, or increases more than 1 inch in size. If treated early, it won’t endanger your health.
