Psychotherapist and author Dr. Barton Goldsmith explained that one of the best things your partner can do for you is to make you feel safe. Life can be tough sometimes. But having someone in your corner who can help you calm down and even make you laugh on those hard days is precious.

2. They know how to listen

We all want to feel heard. And Goldsmith believes that listening is another important component in a happy relationship. You should be able to spend time with your beloved and really listen to whatever it is they are trying to tell you.

3. They express their admiration for each other

Psychologist Kevin D. Arnold, Ph.D., says you don't have to wait until after a fight to do those things that make your partner feels good. You can 'bank' these positive actions and feelings on a day-to-day basis and you just may notice that the chances of conflicts are reduced.

Dr. Arnold also opined that couples should endeavor to make some room in their lives for their partner. Of course, we have so many things on our minds and it's easy for the little details to fade away. But remembering each other's birthdays, favorite songs, favorite foods etc are the little things that cement the love.

It's very important to value your time together. Whether you're on a date or simply having an important conversation, you should turn off all distractions. Social psychologist Dr. Theresa E. DiDonato advises that you save that phone and email checking for later.

Being physically intimate with one another is not the only way to connect. Dr. DiDonato explained that you should take some time afterward to talk to each other as it helps build the trust.

According to Goldsmith, couples must understand that just because your partner is doing things a bit differently from you does not mean their way is wrong. You must always trust and have faith in them to make the right decision. Don't always insist that things go your own way.
