Without further ado: The secret of the Yao women is the regular use of fermented rice water.

Since ancient times, the women from the village of Huangluo have used the water they cooked rice in as a hair wash. For these women, keeping their hair long and shiny was vitally important, as they always believed that their hair is their most precious possession, providing them with wealth, prosperity, good luck, and longevity.

Their locks are considered to be sacred by the Yao women, so they cut their hair only once in their in their lives,  when reaching 18 years of age. They also never allow anyone to touch, or even see it: This exclusive  privilege rightfully belongs just to their husbands and kids.

As mentioned above, the Yao women used fermented rice water to wash their hair. Studies suggest that this misty colored water from boiling rice is very beneficial, as it's rich in vitamin E, antioxidants, and minerals, which have perfect restoring properties.
