He Was Well-Prepared: Texas Man Spends $8,300 Building A Plastic Dam Around His House To Protect It From The Flood
Hurricane season is a very dangerous time of the year, and this is very evident from the level of destruction wreaked by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. A lot of people are willing to take extreme measures to make sure they are prepared when it hits, and a Texas man recently redefined the term ‘prepared.’
Afraid that a storm would flood his house if it came his way, Randy Wagner decided that he wouldn't go down without a fight. Randy, from Roshanda, Texas, spent the whopping sum of $8,300 on an aqua dam that extended up to about 400 ft. His intention? To make his house flood proof.
Almost like the biblical Noah preparing the ark, he began working on setting up the dam that would protect his house from a terrible flood, while friends and neighbors thought him insane. One can hardly blame them, the money and time invested were considerable, but as it turned out, it paid off.
The barrier surrounded the entire property; and his effort, money and time spent were all justified when the rains came. Wind, rain, and flood rampaged through Texas, but due to his almost clairvoyant preparation, Randy saved himself up to $150,000 in possible damages to his home. $8,300 for $150,000? Pretty fair deal if you ask anyone.
The flood was a record-breaking 27-inch high, but it had nothing on Randy's 3 ft aqua dam walls.
How to prepare my house in the event of a hurricane
In this season, one needs to be as prepared as possible, in case a storm hits. When preparing for a hurricane, there are a few things you can do:
1. Ensure that you brace your garage door: This is the most vulnerable part of the house and bracing it will mitigate damages;
2. Secure your doors and windows: Get good locks for your doors and storm shutters or boards for your windows;
3. Secure your roof: You could do this with hurricane straps;
4. Trim your surrounding trees;
5. Take full inventory beforehand;
6. Make sure your insurance is updated.
Although we cannot prevent natural disasters such as hurricanes, we sure can do our best to be prepared in the event of it happening. Like the Boys' Scouts usually say: 'Be Prepared!'
