This video made by UK citizen David Lawrence went viral in no time after he had posted in on Facebook. It features a fierce racist confrontation between a white man and a senior black woman on a Ryanair flight from Barcelona, Spain, to London, England.
The man went aggressive and abused a co-passenger verbally, saying he refused to sit next to her. After calling her offensive names, the man exclaimed:
If you don’t go to another seat, I’ll put you into another seat.
The flight attendant tried to solve the conflict, but that seemed quite a hard thing to do! Internet viewers, like the people on the plane, were surprised by the reaction of the Ryanair company staff. Instead of offering the man another seat, they found another one for the lady and escorted her to the other row.
The company faced major criticism for not putting an abuser off the plane and offering no apology to the woman.
He should have been removed from the flight and handed over to the police. We assume the aircraft was in the UK. If it was, he definitely committed criminal offences. I fully expect @Ryanair to confirm the situation if In fact it was their flight? https://t.co/ORfww9ZiPg— Karl Turner MP (@KarlTurnerMP) October 21, 2018
Why isn’t there an uproar against the other passengers for not standing up to this guy? Why is it just the airline (an anonymous body not actually present) that everyone is upset at? If you see bullying, do something.— Likasil (@Likasil30) October 21, 2018
He threatened her with physical violence. He should have been removed. The airlines should have been looking after here.— Mardhs D. Potts (@DMardhs) October 21, 2018
She was identified as 77-year-old Mrs. Gayle, a member of Windrush Generation. This label goes to the people who immigrated to the UK from the Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971 and who have lived and worked in the UK for decades. Unfortunately, many of them are threatened with deportation as they lack the whole package of appropriate documents.
Unfortunately, the airline abuser may get away with facing responsibility for racism.
Can someone be punished for verbal abuse?
It depends on the tone, gestures, and circumstances, but if the offender is threatening your safety or life, the case may be considered as a criminal violation. Yelling and humiliating someone’s dignity based on sex, race, religion or culture must be punished by law officials.
