The couple, who were inspired by their twins Ella and Alexander, felt heartbroken about the fact that children of undocumented immigrants were taken away from their parents after they were caught crossing the border.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the actor and his wife explained that it would be really sad if their twins asked them someday to explain why babies were taken from parents and put in detention centers as punishment for landing on US soil.

The Clooneys stated that, while they may not be able to change the decision of the current administration, they can help ease the suffering of those who have been affected by it.

George and Amal then announced that the Clooney Foundation for Justice will donate $100,000 to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

The center's director, Maria Woltjen, appreciated the couple for this kind gesture.

She explained that, thanks to the center, children who have been treated cruelly get to receive help.

Treating children so terribly because their parents crossed the border is unfair and violates not just their "legal rights but also their basic needs," she said in a statement.

She went on to state that her establishment is aimed at advocating for these distraught children, some of whom are too young to understand why they were separated from their parents.

Showing her gratitude to George and Amal Clooney, she said:

We are grateful for the generous support of George and Amal Clooney and the Clooney Foundation for Justice — it could not be more vital at this time.

Other stars, like John Legend, his wife Chrissy, Kathy Griffin, Reese Witherspoon and Ellen Degeneres, have also expressed their displeasure at how the Trump administration is handling the immigration issue.
