Date July 16, 2019

Most people, if they were to be in Phil LeClerc's shoes, might not have made the same decisions that he did.

A few years ago, a man decided to clear his then-94-year-old father's house so he could sell some stuff off and raise money to pay for his old man's assisted living care.

The man called up Marg-e Kelley, who owns Kelley Auctions, to function as the intermediary between him and his eventual buyers.

Amongst the items that the man was trying to sell was an antique Governor Winthrop desk.

It was around this time that Phil LeClerc stopped by an auction taking place in Holbrook, Massachusetts, and the Governor Winthrop desk caught his fancy.

Although the desk was showing signs of aging, Phil still wanted the classy furniture to adorn his home, and so he bought it for just $40.

The Governor Winthrop desk was famous for having numerous crevices and hidden drawers so when Phil got home he set about to exploring them.

It was when Phil was trying to find one of the missing knobs on the drawers that he made a huge discovery.

He found an old envelope and inspected it. To his surprise, its contents were unbelievable! Speaking about his find, Phil said:

'The first thing I saw was a $500 bond! But the envelope contained so much more. It was absolutely amazing. I found 50s, and then I found 100s, 200s, 500s and then I found a stack of six $10,000 bonds. The money just kept coming out!'

After Phil was done counting, the amount totaled $127,000 in matured United States Savings Bonds.

However, Phil knew the right thing to do, and he called up Marg-e to explain his findings and she, in turn, contacted the man who had previously owned the desk.

It was just before Thanksgiving that year that the total amount of $127,000 was returned to the owner and the man knew immediately that his ailing father would be taken care of.

Apparently, the family had spent years looking for the bonds, and as time passed, they had given up on ever finding the money.

Thankfully, Phil was a good honest fellow, and he returned the money he found. The family's situation changed and they could afford to pay for the old man's assisted living care.

A kind deed has the power to change lives, and this story is proof of that.
