The parents of two girls, Knatalye Hope and Adeline Faith Mata, were looking forward to the due date for their daughters. However, in April 2014, the whole family was stunned with the news that the twins were born conjoined.
The newborns arrived in this world at the Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. Knatalye and Adeline shared a chest wall, lungs, pericardial sac (the lining of the heart), diaphragm, liver, intestines, colon, and pelvis.
The idea of separating the twins was promising, although the parents knew the girls would be put at serious risk.
After considering all the options, they made the decision to separate them. Those two adorable girls had a right to a normal life and their family wanted to take that chance.
Knatalye and Adeline were only 10 months old when they underwent a separation surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital.
The family held their breath while they waited for the results; they got together and prayed for the well-being of their girls.
God heard their prayers! The separation was a success!
The Texas Children’s Hospital reported on Facebook that the complicated surgery took 23 hours on Knatalye and 26 hours on Adeline, while the official separation occurring approximately 18 hours into the surgery.”
The team included 26 medical professionals: 12 surgeons, 6 anesthesiologists, and 8 surgical nurses. The whole procedure involved pediatric surgery, cardiovascular surgery, plastic surgery, liver transplant surgery, urology, orthopedic surgery and pediatric gynecology.
The medical staff worked very hard and for a good purpose!
The life-changing event was captured by Allen Kramer and Paul Kuntz, and the photos they posted on Facebook bring tears of happiness and admiration for the family and the professional hospital team.
They were strong and united, and that helped them cope with the challenge.
But twin sisters Knatalye and Adeline deserve the most admiration!
There have such a strong life force and vitality! The power of their spirit and the tremendous love and support of their family made this miracle possible!
