When Catherine Howarth had her first child, she was absolutely stunned. The 35-year-old, who is of Nigerian heritage, was surprised to see that she had given birth to a white, blue-eyed baby boy. She never imagined there was any possibility in the world that it would happen again, but it did.
Three years after the birth of her son, Jonah, she was again amazed when the midwife handed her newborn baby, Sophia, who was as white as her brother. Also, with the same striking blue eyes.
The mum is certain she's the only completely black mother of African descent to have two white, blue-eyed children, especially considering the fact that she has no white genes in her family.
Howarth said that she saw a genetic specialist after Jonah was born, who told her that the boy was a one-in-a-million baby.
He also told the mum that the possibility of that happening again was less than one in a million.
She told the UK Dailymail:
No-one has heard of a black mum having two white babies one after the other.
Her 37-year-old husband, Richard, is white so the couple expected that one of their babies may have had lighter skin, but they weren't prepared for how light it would be.
While she has been enjoying and celebrating her babies uniqueness, one thing that started to get old was being asked by strangers if she was really the kids' mother.
I do get tired of being stopped in the street by people asking if I'm the nanny. People seem to find it hard to understand how I could give birth twice to white children.
Howarth also mentioned that, even though Jonah and Sophia seem obviously white, a closer look would reveal some of their black features, especially those similar to their mother's.
The parents are absolutely delighted with their darling kids and they certainly couldn't care less if they were black or white.
