Prince Harry has finally found the love of his life! Meghan Markle, an American actress, has become the official member of the royal family!
The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex have started their family life! They have been together since April 2016, finally, on the 19th of May, they celebrated their love on a beautiful wedding ceremony.
Let's take a look at some of the most interesting facts about the ex-actress.
1. An American in the British royal family
One of the first things people were surprised by is that Prince Harry decided to settle down with an American. But, this is actually not the first time it is happening. In 1937, the Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII) got married to the American socialite Wallis Simpson. Even though he was criticised for his choices at the time, times have changed and Prince Harry has been receiving nothing but support. Markle's father is of Irish and Ditch descent while her mother is African-American.
2. A whirlwind romance
Compared to his brother, William, who dated Kate Middleton for seven years before marriage, Prince Harry's courtship was pretty quick. He proposed to Meghan 16 months after they began dating.
3. A short engagement
The couple announced their engagement on the 27th of November, which means the couple only had a few months to plan the big day. This is really not that unusual in the royal family. William and Kate were engaged for seven months before marriage, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles just two months after their engagement was announced. His engagement to Princess Diana lasted five months. In 1986, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson tied the knots five months after their engagement.
4. Markle's first marriage
For Prince Harry, this is his first trip down the aisle. However, the same cannot be said for Markle who was married to actor and producer, Trevor Engleson, for two years.
5. 'Abuse and harassment'
When the public found out about the relationship between the Prince and the actress, they were relentless. So much so that Prince Harry had to put out a statement condemning the 'abuse and harassment' Markle was facing.
He urged people to cease “the racial undertones of comment pieces; the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments."
6. Markle's official duties
Now that she became the wife of one of the Queen's grandchildren, a few things would be expected of Markle. Some official duties involving charity work would be required of her.
The good news is, Markle is no stranger to charity work. She is the global ambassador for World Vision Canada, was once a counselor for One Young World and was also an advocate for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
7. Her job as an actress
Markle was most famous for her portrayal of Rachel Zane on the TV show, Suits. But being married to a Prince requires her to focus on the duties of the post so this means she had to say goodbye to an acting career.
As Prince Harry and Meghan embark on this journey together, we can only wish them the best of luck. But seeing the way they looked at each other during their wedding ceremony, we are sure they have a long and happy life in front of them.
