Loneliness is contagious! This statement is scary as we all are afraid of loneliness as of a deadly disease. But lonely elderly people are prone to decline in their health and die faster indeed.The University of California in San Francisco report that 18 percent of seniors live alone, while 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis.

Being put in nursing homes, they develop an anxiety and major stress because of changing life style, and being away from their families. Close communication with family members make them feel appreciated and needed, give the feeling of belonging to the kith and kin.
Now the loneliness issue is considered to be a health problem, not just a social one. The scientists from the Department of Health Sciences, University of York claim that deficiencies in social relationships are associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke. There is a connection between loneliness and depression, high blood pressure, and cognitive decline.

Taking steps towards senior people will help them to live longer. Isolation will only harm, even though your older relatives may seem distant. They need to be dragged out of this state.
Spend more quality time together – find out about their hobbies, or maybe try to find a new one, which will unite you. Let them interact with younger generation, kids bring joy and laughter.

Let them pass the wisdom. Senior people have rich experience to share, knowing that it can be useful will effect positively. Unfortunately most of old people think that only young age was something worth living. Help them to grow confidence that life is beautiful in any age, and this awareness will be the best doctor for lonely heart.
