Where is the limit when it comes to love we show our children? You would probably say you can never go too far with expressing affection, but opinions are split. The Beckham family has been slammed recently for kissing their daughter, Harper, on the lips. The former football star posted a shot kissing his young daughter on the lips during a trip to Tanzania, which provoked a different reaction from his followers.
“What a cool dad” or "This is too cute” – some people admired. Others expressed disapproval.
For instance, mrspotatohead01 asked:
So why he doesn’t kiss his sons?
Another user, beatrisouza2010, said:
Dad's don't kiss daughter's in the lips. No, no to creepy.
Victoria has a similar picture with their favorite princess and she received the same criticism for the kiss on the lips.
It may seem like an innocent act of affection between parent and kid, and many people around the world practice it, but psychologists have their own opinion about it.
Dr. Paul Hokemeyer explains that it is important to keep boundaries with showing kids love in order to teach them what is normal and what’s not. Dr. Charlotte Reznick is certain that receiving a kiss on the lips from a parent is confusing. Our mouth is an erogenous zone so such kiss is too sexual and may be stimulating.
On the other hand, many psychologists and experts in child’s development agree that physical contact with parents brings about a positive effect. Children learn how to share emotions; they feel more secure and self-confident. However, a child should know the difference between parent-kid and mom-dad affection, as it is crucial for them to develop a healthy sexuality and a bond with their parents.
